As per the condition and qualification, an applicant can apply for a different type of work permit. Basic eligibility requirements to obtain your temporary work permit are as follow:
- You are currently a resident of Canada and hold a valid study or work permit
- You are graduated from a Canadian college or university
- You have a temporary resident permit that is valid for at least six months
- You are waiting for CIC to process your permanent residence application
There are many different varieties of work permit available:
- Graduate work permit: Applicant becomes eligible to get a minimum of 1 maximum of 3 years of work permit after successful completion of a college education from designated college or institute
- Closed work permit: Applicant can get a closed work permit as a result of positive LMIA (formerly known as LMO labor market opinion).
- Bridging Work Permit: If the applicant already got approved by Province Nomination or already applied for Permanent residence file, then their work permit can be extended.
Type of Work Permit
Post Graduate work Permit – Applicant is eligible to get a minimum of one year of work permit after successful completion of college education from designated college. Valid for between eight months to three years and are a great way to obtain valuable Canadian work experience.
Closed work permit – After issued a positive LMIA you can get a closed work permit that is tied to specific employers. A foreign national must have an official job offer from a Canadian employer which is supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). To apply for a closed work permit application, even those who are LMIA-exempt should be aware of the documentation they required to ensure they are granted entry to Canada. There are two general pathways for obtaining a Canadian work permit: a closed work permit and an open work permit.
Bridging Work Permit – Bridging Work Permit is a much welcome innovation from Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada. It’s the best way to keep workers in Canada working while their applications for permanent residency are processed. It’s an extension to an existing work permit, that allows keeping working until the applicant received PR. The applicant must meet the eligibility criteria to receive a Bridging Open Work Permit
Type of Open Work Permit
Unrestricted – foreign nationals can work in any occupation and location under this type of open work permit
Restricted – restricting the occupation or the location
Applicants must have applied under one of the following programs to be eligible for this work permit:
- Provincial Nominee Program
- Caring for Children Class
- Caring for People with High Medical Needs Class
- Federal Skilled Worker Class
- Canadian Experience Class
- Federal Skilled Trades Class

- Proof required that you will leave Canada at the end of employment
- May required Police Clearance Certificate to show no record of criminal activity
- Provide other required documents the officer needs to establish your acceptability
- Good health and no plan to work with an employer on the List of Ineligible Employers
